Our technicians at Marlock Electric were able to replace & upgrade the corroded panel box and the riser cable on the outside of the house. As you can see in the pictures, our technicians installed a new panel with all wires being ran in a much safer way, ensuring that your electric panels are wired safely along with keeping an eye out for corrosion or rust is very important for the homeowner to keep in mind.

The customer had noticed a problem for the past 6 months and felt a sense of urgency to address the possible issue. When the tech arrived, we found the riser cable that was connected to the meter box, had a crack in the cable and was allowing water to seep in. The biggest problem was the corrosion we found inside the customers panel box. Moisture that enters the panel box can corrode electrical wiring & circuit breakers, which create rust and in severe cases, can cause fires.

At Marlock Electric, no job is too big or too small! On our work schedule, you can typically find a wide variety of projects whether it be something as small as changing a battery in an emergency light, or something as big as installing the electrical service and all new lighting in a commercial building, as well as a generator installation. Our technicians are certified and trained in every area, and we are often praised on how knowledgeable they are. With our crew, even the smaller tasks can transform your home, and increase the safety tremendously. For example, we are often called to switch the outlets in customers' homes from 2-prong outlets to 3-prong. This is a project that might not seem like a big deal, but it makes appliances run much more safely and decreases the risk of fire.

When it comes to dealing with bigger commercial projects, our crew typically helps determine which products/services will best fit the needs of the customer, designing the layout of things, and then dealing with the installations. Although this seems pretty straightforward, a lot of thinking and planning is involved. To determine the size of the electrical service needed for a new commercial building, you must consider how much electricity will be used, and how often. This part of the process typically involves a lot of planning with the customer and talking about what they want as well. When installing the panel box, electric meter, and even some types of lighting/lighting fixtures, you have to ensure that the clearance standards are met, per the NEC. Commercial projects are typically very long, some last months, but our guys work very efficiently, providing customers with the best work possible.

Many of our jobs are in between the smaller scale ones, and the really large ones. We do a lot of lighting installations, service upgrades, and generator installations for customers' homes. We promise that we will treat your home as if it is our own, and we will ensure you are completely satisfied before we leave. Call Marlock Electric today, for whatever electrical project is needed. No job is too big, and no job is too small. Marlock Electric does it all.

Power surges are electrical spikes in your homes electrical system and are actually more common than most people think. They can be caused by things such as a lightning strike, downed trees on power lines, faulty wiring in the residence, when larger electrical loads are calling for power, and when the flow of electricity is interrupted then started again. When these high voltage spikes occur, the electrical surge enters your home and continues through your devices and appliances, damaging them in the process as they can’t withstand the extra voltage. Many homeowners have lost thousands of dollars due to important electrical appliances being damaged from a surge. There have been extreme cases where the house has actually caught on fire. Reading this, I’m sure every homeowner is thinking one thing; “how can I prevent this from happening to my home?” Having a whole house surge protector is an easy way to add safety to your electrical system. Many surge protectors are meant to be installed externally/outside of the electric panel so that when homeowners walk by, they can see whether or not their home is protected, by looking at the visual indicator lights. When your home is protected and you have a power surge, instead of the electrical spike traveling through your electronic devices in your home, the surge protector absorbs the over voltage. Even if the electrical surge does enter your home, it reduces the surges to a safe level for the electronic devices and appliances. Marlock Electric has installed many surge protectors at the request of homeowners to provide them peace of mind with their protection against power surges. If you would like to know more about how you can avoid the detrimental effects of power surges and experience this sense of security, call our office today!

Are the Outlet's in your Home Safe? The Reasoning Behind the Dangers of two-Prong Outlets

Although most homes nowadays have three-prong outlets, many older homes still contain outdated two-prong outlets. Finish reading to find out why this can be a huge problem for homeowners.

Most homes nowadays contain three-prong outlets to plug in electrical appliances and other items that need a power source, but if you are an owner of an older home (one that was built before the 1970’s), you will want to check what your outlets look like. Three-prong outlets were not invented until the late 1960’s, so most older homes contain two-prong outlets (unless they have already been replaced) which are quite dangerous in today’s technology driven world. If you do not know the difference between the two types of outlets, take a look at the ones in your home and determine how many holes/slots are in each one. A three-prong outlet will have two slots on the top, and a third slot towards the bottom of the outlet. A two-prong outlet has the two slots at the top, but not another one underneath. I bet you are now wondering what is so important about the bottom slot (if you don’t know already), and why having only two slots is not enough. Two-prong outlets have two wires running through them (a neutral wire and a hot wire), and are not grounded which can leave homeowners unprotected from stray currents that could potentially result in someone being electrocuted, or expensive electronics being damaged from a power surge. The third slot in three-prong outlets have a third wire, which is the grounding wire. This wire allows for power surges to travel somewhere else, whereas they would normally go to a person, or to electrical equipment in a two-prong outlet. If a surge of excess electricity occurs, the risk of fire and/or electrocution increases greatly, but if you have a grounding wire, the excess electricity travels from the outlet, to the electrical panel, and then out through the ground wire into the ground outside, which absorbs the excess energy into the earth. Certain appliances are more susceptible to these dangers than others, such as larger and more modern appliances. Items such as computers, televisions, vacuums, large kitchen appliances (i.e. stove, refrigerator, etc.), should all be plugged into three-prong outlets. A good indication of whether or not something needs a three-prong outlet or not, is by looking at the number of prongs on the plug of the electrical item itself. For example, some smaller items only have two prongs, indicating that they are generally safe to plug into a two-prong outlet with no grounding. Bigger appliances however, possess a plug with three prongs, indicating a three-prong outlet with grounding is a must.

With electricity being used in today’s world more than ever due to the overall rise in technology, power surges are even more common. If your home contains two-prong outlets still and you are interested in learning more about how you can protect your home, give Marlock Electric a call for more information.

Upon arrival, our technicians determined that the best solution would be to install new circuits for her sewing machines. Marlock Electric provided both the materials and labor for this project, and installed new circuits that were completely dedicated to her sewing machines in her basement. This helps separate the electrical load from her other electrical appliances. Even though this was a minor problem and did not cause any serious troubles, it is better to be safe than sorry. This customer can now have peace of mind when completing her projects by use of her sewing machines, and not worry about overloading the circuits. While we were there, the customer also needed a new switch and face plate installed for her bath fan.

A customer called us concerned about the load on her circuits due to using too much power. As she further explained her concern and the reasoning behind it, she talked about how she uses multiple sewing machines a lot in her free time as it is one of her hobbies. On top of other electrical appliances she uses such as the microwave, washer & dryer, refrigerator, etc., she was worried that her large use of her sewing machines would overload the circuits. Despite her concerns, she did not want to stop sewing, or limit how much she sewed. She also needed to use multiple machines at a time to be more efficient with her time, and complete multiple parts of the project at once, or multiple projects at once. This customer wanted to know if their was anything Marlock Electric could do to relieve her from her worries, and make the usage of all her electrical appliances safer.

Generators are a very important machine to have and can help homeowners avoid many problems and keep businesses up and running during a power outage.

The installation of Generators are increasing rapidly as homeowners/business executives are realizing the great importance they have. Generators are machines that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, and then transfer that power to the home's electrical panel. They automatically activate seconds after power is lost, and shut off on their own once power is restored. Living in Upstate New York, we all experience many different storms throughout the year such as snow storms/blizzards, ice storms, thunderstorms, and windstorms which can all cause power outages. Think back to the ice storm of 1991 that left many people without power for 2 weeks... Other common causes of power outages include trees falling on power lines (possibly from high winds), and a high power demand. When a home loses power, they lose heating/air conditioning, power to all electrical appliances (causing temperatures to drop in refrigerators and freezers which can cause food to spoil and go to waste), lighting, television, all electrical outlets, and no hot water. You could possibly even lose all access to water if you are someone who uses well water which requires power. Generators also keep submersible pumps powered so your basement does not get flooded, which is common in power outages. We have seen customer's basements that are completely ruined due to flooding during a power outage; the furniture, walls, molding, and flooring are all ruined which can be anywhere from $30-60k lost. Not having access to power for a little bit seems like it might not be a big deal, but think about how you would be effected if you lost power for even just a day. You would have no access to any entertainment (i.e. radio/television), no landline and limited access to cell phones due to not being able to charge your phone, limited access to laptops because of the same reason, and no access to a desktop computer which is a major problem for people who work from home. Another potential problem would be not being able to operate your garage door with your car stuck inside, leaving many people unable to leave until power is restored. As you can see, losing power can be a problem for many reasons, but the scariest problems occur in the winter. With temperatures well below freezing, and the wind chill bringing it below zero at times, nobody wants to be stuck at home with no heat. There is also the risk of pipes freezing if the power is lost and it is cold enough, but with a generator the heat is kept on even in the worst and coldest storms, so pipes can never freeze. Utility companies have cut down on man power over the years which means they can't service power outages as fast paced as before, leaving more and more homeowners without power for much longer. Do you have a back up plan?

Generators are absolutely necessary in buildings requiring a constant source of electricity such as airports, hospitals/doctors offices, hotels, etc. all to make sure travelers and patients remain safe and protected. Even though homeowners do not necessarily need a constant source of electricity, it is still very important for safety reasons like the ones listed above, and convenience. Many businesses decide to purchase generators as well to avoid losing any important data/work and to keep their company running successfully.

Generators supply people with constant reassurance that they will be safe during a power outage, giving them peace of mind whenever a big storm is coming, as they have nothing to worry about. Any interruption on whatever we do that requires electricity can be completely avoided. Although a generator may seem like a big investment, your safety and well being is something you can not put a price on, and if they are well maintained, they can last 30+ years! A certified technician should be checking your generator once a year to keep it running smoothly.

Call Marlock Electric today so you never have to worry about power outages again! Our technicians are certified in installation and maintenance.

This project consisted of installing an 800 amp 480 v electrical service which provides more than enough power to keep the dome inflated, as well as power for the HVAC equipment, lighting, and receptacles. We also installed an 80 kw automatic standby generator which will assure the dome stays inflated if there is ever an interruption of power. That source of protection can now put the colleges at ease as the dome will never lose power thanks to the generator. This project involved running numerous amounts of underground conduits throughout the playing field to distribute power, data, and a fire alarm throughout the building.

Marlock Electric was proud to be a part of the new 83,000-square-foot multi-purpose indoor inflatable fieldhouse at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. This inflatable dome houses an artificial turf playing field that converts to five tennis, and four basketball courts. We were called to install the new wiring, and an electrical service that was able to provide enough power to keep the dome inflated at all times. The colleges also expressed their concern with their power going out, causing the dome to deflate.
